Mark is blunt that it is not humanly possible to do two or more effortful things simultaneously. What people call multitasking is fast switching of conscious attention. You can pair one conscious task with one automatic one, like driving while talking, but the moment the automatic task demands attention, the conscious one stops.

Switching attention carries measurable costs. Studies of physicians, nurses and pilots show more errors when they switch, including prescribing errors. Every switch incurs a switch cost, the time to reorient.
