Radio astronomers often assume aliens will be wise, peaceful and altruistic. Cooper pushes back using evolutionary biology: altruism comes in two forms, kin altruism (protecting those who share your genes) and reciprocal altruism (I'll help you if you help me). We share no genes with aliens and they have no reason to give us anything in return, so assuming benevolence is a flawed extrapolation.
