Melatonin carries a 'darkness' signal around the body rather than being a true sleep hormone; some people have no detectable melatonin and sleep fine. It's remarkably safe and non-habit-forming, and genuinely useful for jet lag and shift work to realign the clock, but for healthy people with normal rhythms it does little beyond slightly faster sleep onset.

Among sleep supplements, Potter finds glycine most interesting: it's benign, tastes like sugar, and may aid sleep by acting on the master clock to increase blood flow to extremities, boosting the radiator effect that drops core temperature. About 3 grams an hour before bed is his suggestion, and he'd try it before melatonin.
