Parenting shapes you far less than people think
Narcissism, like most traits, is roughly 50% genetic. Only 10-20% traces to parenting, with around 30% coming from hard-to-pin non-shared environment: culture, friends and random events. Parents matter enormously for love and care, but they cannot mould you into one kind of person.
- About 50% of narcissism is inherited, possibly slightly higher for the trait
- Parenting accounts for only 10-20%, less than the popular belief
- Roughly 30% is non-shared environment: culture, peers, random events
- Adoption studies show traits track biological, not adoptive, parents
- Every trait carries significant genetic influence (the Plomin 'blueprint' point)
“the parenting piece is never as important as people think parenting matters a lot but they can't really shape you that well to be one…”
