Why biological sex comes down to gamete size, not chromosomes

Stewart-Williams lands on the traditional scientific definition: sex is defined by gamete size, with sperm being the small gametes and eggs the large ones. This is one of the few near-universal generalizations in biology because it is partly definitional — males are the ones producing smaller gametes. All sexually reproducing life started isogamous, producing same-sized gametes. That state is evolutionarily unstable: once some gametes get bigger to pack survival supplies for offspring, a selection pressure appears for smaller, more numerous gametes that seek out the large ones and ride their coattails. The mid-sized gametes lose on both counts — worse survival and lower numbers — so the population splits to the two extremes of a barbell.
