The Approach Journal is a self-audit tool that makes an invisible problem visible. Most men who are unhappy with their dating life never draw the conclusion that they simply aren't approaching anyone, because scrolling social media tricks them into feeling they interact with women constantly. Anderson has clients log every in-person conversation with a woman on a phone note, without needing to escalate to a number or date for it to count. Like using a calorie tracker to discover you eat 2,200 calories instead of 1,500, the journal usually reveals a shockingly low real number. The fix is paired with taking the pressure off: approach people generally, of all ages, to build the muscle before targeting women you are attracted to.

Origin

Developed by dating coach Blaine Anderson from patterns across her male clients, who consistently failed to connect their lack of dates to their near-zero real-world approach rate.

Core principles

  • 01You cannot improve what you refuse to measure
  • 02Most men vastly overestimate how often they actually talk to women
  • 03Social media and OnlyFans create the illusion of interacting with women
  • 04Approaching is a numbers game before it is a skill game

How to run it

  1. 1

    Set up the journal

Create a dedicated note on your phone or a physical journal specifically for logging approaches.

Pro tip Keep it somewhere frictionless so you actually log in the moment.

  2. 2

Log every in-person conversation with a woman

Record each time you actually talk to a woman in real life. It does not need to end in a number or a date to count.

Watch out Online DMs, OnlyFans interactions and social scrolling do not count and should never be logged.

  3. 3

    Review the weekly total honestly

At the end of the week, look at the real number. Most men are shocked to find it is one or two, not the ten or fifteen they imagined.

Pro tip Compare it to your assumption first, then to reality, so the gap lands.

  4. 4

Take the pressure off and widen the target

Practice approaching people generally, women of all ages, with the goal of connecting rather than getting a number. Build comfort before targeting women you find attractive.

Pro tip Going from swiping on the couch straight to approaching a 10 is terrifying; start with low-stakes reps.

In the wild

The calorie-tracker moment

Anderson compares the journal to a fitness app: a man swears he only eats 1,500 calories, then tracks it for a week and finds it was 2,200. Likewise a man insists he's approaching ten to fifteen women a week, tracks it, and discovers the real number is one, maybe. The data, not the argument, changes his behaviour.

The client confronts an objective gap between his self-image and reality, creating motivation to actually approach.

Common mistakes

Counting online interactions as approaches

DMing women or interacting on OnlyFans feels like contact but is not the same as walking up to a woman in a grocery store or park; logging it defeats the purpose.

Only approaching women you're attracted to

Making every rep high-stakes keeps anxiety maxed out; the journal works best when paired with low-pressure practice on people generally.

Is it for you?

Best for

Men who believe they are trying but aren't, and need objective data on their real approach volume.

Not ideal for

Men who already approach in high volume and need conversion or attraction skills instead.
