Gladwell's core model is that spread of anything contagious — disease, ideas, crime, addiction — is radically asymmetrical: roughly 5% of actors do about 90% of the work. The strategic move is not to broadcast widely but to locate that tiny high-leverage minority and pour resources into it. What changed in 25 years is transparency: modern tracking and databases now reveal exactly who the superspreaders are and where they operate, which supercharges the payoff of concentration. The mechanism is three-part: (1) recognise the asymmetry, (2) use data to pinpoint the nodes, (3) ignore the majority and target only the minority. Applied benignly it drives efficient policing and pest control; applied ruthlessly it produced the opioid crisis.

Malcolm Gladwell developed this from sociologists' epidemic metaphors in The Tipping Point (2000) and deepened it in Revenge of the Tipping Point, arguing the asymmetry has become both stronger and newly visible in the digital age.

How to run it

    Assume asymmetry, not uniformity

    Treat the outcome as driven by a small fraction of actors rather than evenly across the population. Gladwell argues almost every modern phenomenon now fits this pattern.

    Pro tip Ask 'what share of actors produces the majority of the result?' before designing any outreach.

    Locate the asymmetry with data

    Use tracking, databases, and mapping to find exactly who or where the high-leverage nodes are. Transparency of the asymmetry is what makes targeting possible.

    Pro tip The node may be geographic (city blocks, a mosquito swarm) or individual (specific doctors, connected people).

    Watch out Certainty about who the superspreader is amplifies their power — including in the wrong hands.

    Concentrate every resource on the minority

    Redirect budget and effort onto the identified nodes instead of spreading it thin across the whole population.

    Pro tip Frame it as 'fighting the epidemic at its source' rather than blanket coverage.

    Stop spending on the indifferent majority

    Deliberately withdraw effort from the many who neither spread nor block the outcome, since they contribute little either way.

    Pro tip Most competitors still chase everyone; abandoning the majority is the edge.

    Watch out Ethically neutral as a mechanism — the same precision serves harm as easily as good.

In the wild

Purdue and the opioid crisis

Rather than marketing OxyContin to every doctor, Purdue used prescribing databases to find roughly 2,000 doctors out of hundreds of thousands who 'didn't give a shit' about opioid danger. They poured all resources into convincing that tiny fraction to prescribe as much as possible. Gladwell calls this the entire explanation of the opioid crisis — a ruthless application of asymmetry targeting.

Hotspot policing and drone mosquito spraying

Criminologists can map the 15-20 city blocks where 50% of a city's crime happens and concentrate police there. A Florida county replaced blanket pesticide planes with lidar and drones that find the exact mosquito swarm and spray only that spot. Both exploit the same asymmetry: nearly all the damage comes from a small, locatable source.

Dramatically more efficient interventions by fighting the problem at its concentrated source.

Common mistakes

Trying to reach everybody

Believing you need maximum customers or coverage wastes resources; the majority contributes almost nothing to spread. Purdue's edge was rejecting this instinct.

Guessing the nodes instead of measuring

Acting on a vague hunch about who the influentials are squanders the model's power. The modern advantage is precisely identifying the superspreaders with data.
