Nicola's cold protocol is built around hormesis — the principle that a stressor near the survival threshold triggers a protective adaptation. Full neck-down immersion in roughly 12-degree water for at least 12 minutes brings the body to that threshold in a way a cold shower cannot, because a shower never sinks cold into the skin long enough. Within about five minutes, immersion releases cold-shock proteins and a large surge of norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter that drives focus and vigilance for the day. It also lowers inflammatory biomarkers and can reduce neural inflammation via a brain pathway. The key timing rule: never immerse straight after resistance training, because cold blocks the inflammatory hormetic response that muscles need to rebuild stronger.

How to run it

Immerse neck-down, do not just shower
Get the body from the neck down into cold water so the cold sinks in and sustains contact; a cold shower does not keep the body in contact long enough to shock it.
Pro tip You can put your feet up on the end of the bath; wrists, clavicle and neck-down coverage maximizes the immersion.

Use a thermometer in the bath and bring it to roughly 12 degrees, sometimes lower, cold enough to be genuinely hard.

Hold for at least twelve minutes where tolerable so you pass the ~5-minute point where norepinephrine and cold-shock proteins release.
