Altucher's Daily Practice reduces a chaotic, complex life to four controllable inputs he tries to improve by 1% every day: physical health (eating, moving, sleeping a little better), emotional health (pruning toxic relationships, investing in good ones), creative health (treating creativity as a muscle and exercising it daily), and spiritual health (accepting what you can't control and keeping expectations low). The mechanism is that these four inputs are the true upstream causes of ideas, energy and execution: if you're sick, fighting, uncreative or anxious, you can't build anything. By focusing only on today's 1% improvement rather than distant outcomes, you remove anxiety about a future you can't control while reliably moving in the right direction. He credits abandoning this practice for each collapse and resuming it for each recovery.

Origin

Altucher developed it after going broke several times from millions. Facing a 'gun to my head' moment, he asked what worked on the way up and what he'd dropped on the way down, and realized he'd abandoned this daily practice each time he fell.

Core principles

  • 01The only things you can control are what you improve today.
  • 02Physical, emotional, creative and spiritual health compound into everything else.
  • 03Keep expectations low so you don't manufacture disappointment.
  • 04Boil a chaotic life down to a few controllable inputs and the outputs take care of themselves.
  • 05Faith in the process replaces anxiety about the long run.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Improve physical health 1%

Each day check that you are eating, moving and sleeping slightly better than yesterday. No gym or diet required, just a tiny incremental improvement.

Pro tip If you get sick you won't have ideas, so treat health as the base of everything else.

  2. 2

    Improve emotional health 1%

Prune the toxic relationships in your life and put energy into the better ones.

Watch out Constant arguing with a spouse or bad partners drains the energy you'd otherwise use to create.

  3. 3

    Exercise creative health

Treat creativity as a muscle that atrophies within days or weeks of disuse and work it every day, typically by writing ten ideas.

Pro tip Execution is a subset of ideas, so a strong idea muscle also produces better execution.

  4. 4

    Tend spiritual health

Cultivate a sense that some things can't be controlled, don't worry about them, and keep expectations low. It need not involve prayer or meditation.

Watch out High expectations set you up for disappointment.

  5. 5

Judge the day only on the 1%

Stop asking whether you'll be broke in two years or how you'll feed your kids in six months. Ask only whether you improved physically, emotionally, creatively and spiritually today.

Pro tip Do this consistently and you never have to think about the long run.

In the wild

Rebuilding from $143

After building and selling a business for millions, Altucher lost everything within two years, ending up with $143 in his bank account, and repeated the make-lose cycle four or five times. In his lowest, near-suicidal state he identified that the common denominator was himself and that he'd dropped his daily practice. He restarted focusing every single day on 1% improvement across the four health areas, rebuilt his inner strength, and eventually regained the skills to keep and grow money, not just make it.

Twenty years later he attributes a stable, creative life and repeated recoveries to the practice.

Common mistakes

Optimizing outcomes instead of inputs

Fixating on revenue, clients and milestones creates anxiety; the practice works because it targets the controllable upstream inputs instead.

Dropping it once things go well

Altucher abandoned the practice on every upswing and collapsed each time; the value is in never stopping.

Treating it as a fixed prescription

Everyone's version differs; forcing a gym-and-vegan template rather than your own 1% defeats the purpose.

Is it for you?

Best for

Anyone rebuilding after a setback or feeling paralyzed by a complex, high-stakes life.

Not ideal for

People who need hard external deadlines and metrics rather than an internal daily rhythm.
