Dopamine is the molecule of motivation and pursuit, and biochemically it is the precursor from which adrenaline is manufactured, so generating it produces usable energy. Because reward is entirely internal, you can set arbitrary milestones just beyond your comfort zone, and when you reach one, allowing yourself a brief internal celebration converts dopamine into the drive to set and hit the next one. The schedule matters: computer-modelling and animal-human data point to rewarding roughly 85% of successes and randomly withholding about 15%, mimicking the intermittent reinforcement that most powerfully sustains behavior. Pick a milestone just outside the distance of what you are comfortable with, whether the next lamppost or the next five miles. You control where it sits.
