Johnson's sauna protocol targets toxin and microplastic clearance while protecting fertility. He uses a traditional dry sauna (infrared doesn't get hot enough, wet sauna burns) at roughly 200F/93C for 20 minutes daily, stacked immediately after a workout so he's pre-warmed and time-efficient. The load-bearing detail is icing: cheap BPA-free ice packs held against the testicles inside two layers of cotton, because sauna heat otherwise smashes sperm count, motility and morphology by around 50%. He wipes sweat as it surfaces (to capture excreted toxins) and showers straight after. He credits the protocol with a ~90% reduction in blood and semen microplastics, dramatic toxin clearance after LA-wildfire exposure, a 400% VEGF increase and record-high fertility markers, though he can't fully separate sauna from icing effects.

Origin

Extracted from Bryan Johnson's Blueprint experiments, including measuring toxin load before and after the LA wildfires and running icing on/off cycles to isolate fertility effects.

Core principles

  • 01Dry sauna raises core temperature where infrared and wet sauna can't
  • 02Toxins and microplastics are excreted through sweat
  • 03Heat annihilates fertility markers unless the testicles are cooled
  • 04Stack the sauna onto an existing workout to save time and pre-warm
  • 05Expect an adaptation period before benefits stabilise

How to run it

  1. 1

    Choose a traditional dry sauna

Use a dry sauna, not infrared (too cool to raise core temperature) or wet (burns at the needed temperatures). Set it to about 200F / 93C.

Pro tip Dry sauna has the most evidence because the goal is raising core body temperature.

  2. 2

    Stack it after a workout

Do the 20-minute session immediately after training so you're already warmed up and don't waste the first several minutes reaching temperature.

Pro tip Habit-stacking the sauna onto training makes the routine far more consistent.

  3. 3

    Ice the testicles

Place two reusable BPA-free ice packs against the testicles, held by cotton underwear plus cotton shorts, for the whole session to protect fertility markers.

Pro tip Cheap blue Amazon ice packs (pack of four, ~$8) work fine.

Watch out Without icing, sauna heat can crash sperm count, motility and morphology by ~50%.

  4. 4

    Wipe sweat and shower after

Wipe sweat off as it surfaces so excreted toxins don't dry back onto the skin, then shower straight after the session.

  5. 5

    Ride out the adaptation period

Do it daily, but expect the first one to two weeks to feel harsh and even disrupt sleep; benefits and tolerance stabilise after adaptation.

Pro tip Once adapted, an evening session may actually improve sleep; run it as an experiment.

Watch out Doing sauna in the morning or before adaptation initially wrecked Johnson's sleep.

In the wild

90% microplastic reduction

Johnson measured microplastics in his blood and semen, then ran the dry-sauna-plus-ice protocol daily. He reported over a 90% reduction in both, which he described as a first-in-world demonstration since no one had previously repaired semen microplastic levels. After LA wildfire exposure left him in the 99th percentile for toxins, the sauna 'annihilated' them.

~90% blood and semen microplastic reduction plus dramatic toxin clearance.

Common mistakes

Skipping the ice packs

Heat without testicular cooling smashes fertility markers by roughly half, with downstream negative effects on testosterone and overall health even if you don't want children.

Using infrared or wet sauna

Infrared doesn't raise core temperature enough and wet sauna burns at the required heat; only dry sauna delivers the intended effect.

Is it for you?

Best for

Someone with sauna access wanting a simple daily detox and vascular-health protocol without exotic equipment.

Not ideal for

People without dry-sauna access or with heat-sensitive medical conditions.
