The Four Seasons of Creativity

Cycle through lost, curious, intense, and consistent to sustain creative output for life

Koe observed three or four macro periods of creativity in his own life and mapped them into a repeating four-season cycle. It begins with feeling lost — usually right after hitting a long-pursued goal. If you avoid distraction, you move into curiosity, sampling interests until one becomes something you can't pull away from. That pulls you into intensity, where the twelve-hour days and biggest progress happen, but the peak is unsustainable. The final season is consistency: instead of clinging to the peak, you build a system that maintains a higher baseline while you free yourself for the next cycle. He likens intensity to building muscle and consistency to cutting fat to reveal what you built.

Origin

Koe derived this from noticing three or four recurring macro periods of productivity and creativity across his own working life, each starting in a lost phase after a big goal.

Core principles

  • 01Creative life is cyclical, not linear — each cycle resets like a chapter
  • 02Peaks are inherently unsustainable and should not be chased indefinitely
  • 03Feeling lost is the start of a cycle, not a failure
  • 04Intensity builds; consistency reveals and maintains what you built

How to run it

  1. 1

    Recognize the Lost season

Notice the disorientation that follows hitting a long-pursued goal. This is the natural start of a new cycle, not evidence something is wrong.

Pro tip Label it out loud: 'I'm in a lost season' so you stop panicking about direction.

Watch out Filling this phase with scrolling, Netflix, or boredom-default habits aborts the cycle before it starts.

  2. 2

    Enter Curiosity

Pursue new interests and go down rabbit holes, experimenting until you find the one thing you cannot pull yourself away from.

Pro tip Give yourself permission to try things once rather than committing prematurely.

  3. 3

    Ride the Intensity

Go all-in on the gripping project — the long work days, the novel build. Challenge is high and so is fulfillment.

Pro tip Stay aware at the peak so you learn to sustain a higher baseline rather than flying too close to the sun.

Watch out Other life areas will peel back; don't let them fall off completely.

  4. 4

    Build for Consistency

Once you hit an unsustainable peak, stop chasing it and instead build a system that maintains a higher baseline of the progress you made.

Pro tip Name in advance the lower baseline you'll hold for the areas that took a backseat.

Watch out Trading long-term consistency for short-term intensity gets you kicked out of the game early.

In the wild

The gym peak-to-baseline swing

Koe describes hitting a new monthly high in the gym — a new max weight — and recognizing it as a spike he knows is not sustainable. Instead of trying to keep PRing, he shifts into the consistency season: what system maintains this elevated baseline without pushing to failure every session. He compares it to bulking then cutting — intensity adds mass, consistency reveals it.

Sustained a higher baseline of strength across cycles instead of burning out chasing peaks.

Common mistakes

Chasing the peak forever

Treating an intensity spike as a permanent new normal leads to sluggishness, lost motivation, and collapse. Peaks are for building, not maintaining.

Letting other areas fully fall off

During intensity, health, relationships, or work will recede — but letting them collapse entirely makes it far harder to regain steam later.

Is it for you?

Best for

Solo creators and founders whose motivation and output move in macro waves rather than a steady line.

Not ideal for

People who genuinely thrive doing one singular high-baseline thing indefinitely.
