High Standards, High Support is a coaching model that treats challenge and care as complements. The leader sets an ambitious, explicit standard and gives the learner real opportunities to stretch, struggle, and sometimes fail. At the same time, the leader understands the person's motivation, notices emotional barriers, provides useful resources, and helps them reflect without taking over the task. The standard remains high, but the person does not face it alone. Price argues that this combination helps children do things others do not think they can do and builds confidence from demonstrated competence rather than reassurance. In Alpha's model, technology handles much of the personalized academic routing so human guides can concentrate on the motivational support, mentorship, accountability, and connection that make demanding goals sustainable.

Origin

MacKenzie Price repeatedly described high standards paired with high support as a core condition for children to thrive at Alpha School.

Core principles

  • 01People thrive when ambitious expectations and strong support rise together.
  • 02Support means understanding motivation, emotion, and the person's reason for acting.
  • 03High standards should produce opportunities to stretch and fail safely.
  • 04Confidence is strongest when it follows demonstrated competence.
  • 05Human connection is a distinct function that should not be crowded out by routine instruction.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Set the stretch standard

Choose an outcome that demands growth and state the pass condition clearly. The goal should be difficult enough to require new capability.

Watch out A vague aspiration cannot create useful accountability.

  2. 2

    Find the person's why

Learn what makes the person care, what excites them, and what they tell themselves under pressure. Use that knowledge to make the challenge personally meaningful.

Pro tip Ask about interests and internal self-talk rather than assuming the same incentive motivates everyone.

  3. 3

Build the support around the goal

Provide coaching, resources, feedback, and emotional steadiness while leaving the learner responsible for the performance.

Pro tip Separate routine instruction from coaching time so connection is not squeezed out.

Watch out Doing the difficult work for the learner converts support into rescue.

  4. 4

    Use failure as information

Let the learner attempt hard things, then examine what happened, what went wrong, and what should change. Keep failure inside a supported learning loop.

Watch out Punishing every failed attempt teaches people to avoid challenges that threaten their record.

  5. 5

    Prove and name the growth

Require the learner to meet the standard, then connect the result to the specific competence and persistence they developed.

Pro tip Ground praise in observable evidence rather than generic encouragement.

In the wild

A supported impossible challenge

Alpha students are given projects such as completing a triathlon, running a business, or delivering a public talk. Guides hold them to the outcome while helping with motivation, resources, feedback, and reflection rather than lowering the standard or completing the work for them.

Students gain confidence that is tied to something difficult they can now demonstrably do.

Common mistakes

Standards without connection

Demanding performance without understanding motivation or emotion can make challenge feel arbitrary and isolating.

Support that removes the challenge

Rescuing the learner or lowering the standard prevents the competence that grounded confidence requires.

Protecting people from every failure

Avoiding failure teaches risk avoidance. Supported failure provides information for the next attempt.

Is it for you?

Best for

Teachers, coaches, managers, and mentors guiding people through difficult goals that can build real capability.

Not ideal for

Unsafe environments where failure has irreversible consequences or where the leader cannot provide adequate resources and care.
