Young distinguishes learning—the work that builds the target knowledge or skill—from metalearning, the work of understanding how learning in that domain functions. Effective projects oscillate between them. Begin with actual practice, observe where the process is inefficient, then briefly step back to investigate resources, feedback, drills, or another method. Apply the adjustment and return to practice so its value is tested against performance. Young describes the nine Ultralearning principles as dials: a learner notices that one is out of position and turns it rather than following one universal sequence. The cycle prevents two opposite failures: blindly persisting with a method that has plateaued and spending all available time studying learning instead of acquiring the skill itself.

In the wild
Young practised portrait drawing with one approach for about two weeks. When he concluded that it could get him only so far, he stopped, researched another method, took a course, and resumed. The learning sessions produced the evidence; the metalearning interval changed the process.

Common mistakes
Researching without practising
Metalearning becomes detached speculation when no performance problem tells the learner what to investigate.
Persisting after a plateau
Repeating an ineffective activity without diagnosing it can preserve the bottleneck indefinitely.
