The Leptin Reset targets leptin resistance, the state where fat still produces the satiety hormone leptin but the brain no longer receives the signal, so you keep eating despite ample fat stores. The proposed cause is circadian: chronic excess artificial blue light at night plus insufficient daytime sunlight disrupt leptin production and reception. The reset works by resynchronising the body's master and peripheral clocks. On waking you watch the sunrise for the light signal and eat roughly 50 grams of protein within thirty minutes, which both resets the brain clock via light and the gut and organ clocks via digestion, plus enough fat to feel full and stop craving carbs. After four to six weeks of consistent, low-late-carb adherence, leptin signalling should recover, at which point cold thermogenesis can efficiently burn stored fat as heat.

Origin

The protocol comes from neurosurgeon Dr Jack Kruse, whose 'leptin series' first made him known online. Matt Maruca presents it as part of the Light Diet, citing Kruse's own reported loss of roughly 80 kilos in under 18 months using cold therapy and this reset, and noting the morning-protein element echoes Tim Ferriss's Slow-Carb approach.

Core principles

  • 01Obesity is often a signalling failure, not just overeating: the brain stops hearing leptin
  • 02Chronic night-time blue light and daytime sun deprivation drive leptin resistance
  • 03A big morning protein meal plus sunrise light resyncs the brain and organ clocks
  • 04Only once leptin signalling works can cold therapy efficiently burn stored fat as heat
  • 05Consistency for several weeks without cheating is what makes the reset hold

How to run it

  1. 1

    Anchor the morning with light

On waking, get outside and watch or face the sunrise so the light hits your eyes and triggers the hormonal cascade that sets your circadian clock.

Pro tip Set an alarm shortly before sunrise even if you dislike alarms, to force the reset while your rhythm is off.

Watch out Missing the first-hour-of-sunrise signal leaves the clock unset for the rest of the day, blunting the whole reset.

  2. 2

Eat a big protein breakfast fast

Within 30 minutes of waking, eat around 50 grams of protein, adding fat as needed to feel completely full, which resyncs the gut and organ clocks and suppresses carb cravings.

Pro tip The protein load makes you far less likely to crave carbohydrates later in the day.

Watch out Skimping on the protein or adding carbs undermines the satiety and clock-reset effect.

  3. 3

Protect the reset for 4-6 weeks

Hold the protocol consistently for four to six weeks, wearing blue blockers at night and avoiding carb-heavy late eating, without cheating.

Pro tip Treat the window as non-negotiable; compliance is the single biggest predictor of whether it works.

Watch out Eating a lot of carbs at night is a reliable way to break the cycle and stall the reset.

  4. 4

    Layer in cold thermogenesis

Once leptin signalling has recovered, add regular cold exposure so the body burns stored fat as heat rather than storing it.

Pro tip A water-filled chest freezer makes a cheap deep cold plunge if you have no cold ocean or tap water.

Watch out Adding cold before the reset is complete misses the point; unplug any electrical freezer before getting in.

In the wild

Kruse's own 80-kilo transformation

Matt cites Dr Jack Kruse, who was morbidly obese partly from years of disruptive night-shift neurosurgery, as the origin case for the reset. Kruse combined the leptin-reset diet and circadian strategy with regular cold thermogenesis, ice baths, and reportedly lost about 160 pounds, roughly 80 kilos, in just under a year and a half, largely without exercise, by first fixing the hormonal signalling and then burning fat with cold.

A dramatic reported fat loss driven by fixing leptin signalling first, then adding cold, rather than by exercise or calorie restriction alone.

Common mistakes

Adding cold before fixing leptin

Cold thermogenesis only burns fat efficiently once leptin signalling is restored, so jumping straight to ice baths skips the step that makes it work.

Cheating with late-night carbs

Carb-heavy eating at night disrupts the very leptin and sleep signalling the reset is trying to repair, breaking the cycle.

Quitting before the multi-week window

The reset needs four to six consistent weeks to hold; abandoning it early means judging a protocol that never had time to take effect.

Is it for you?

Best for

People carrying excess fat who suspect their appetite and satiety signalling is broken and want a circadian-based reset before adding cold therapy.

Not ideal for

Anyone wanting rapid weight loss without changing morning routine, light habits or diet, or who will abandon it before the multi-week window.

the brain doesn't get that signal anymore and so that's how people become obese is because they become leptin resistant

50 grams of protein within 30 minutes of watching the sunrise in particular

since your leptin should be working after four to six weeks on that protocol ... then you can start effectively burning your fat as heat
