The method reframes learning as retrieval rather than absorption. Rereading and highlighting feel productive and create fluency, but that fluency decays fast. Instead, you make learning effortful in three deliberate ways. First, retrieval practice: after encountering material you close the source and try to recall it, which strengthens the memory traces and the cues needed to find it again. Second, desirable difficulties: you space practice across days and interleave different problem types, so recall takes more effort and the brain encodes more robust, transferable skill. Third, metacognition: you self-test to expose the gap between what feels known and what is actually known, and you adopt a growth mindset that treats struggle as the mechanism of improvement rather than a sign of failure.

Marketing consultant Peter Brown co-wrote Make It Stick with cognitive psychologists Roddy Roediger and Mark McDaniel, translating a decade of retrieval-and-learning research across eleven universities into an anecdotal, general-audience book about how learning actually works.

    Retrieve instead of reread

    After a lecture or passage, turn away from the source and quiz yourself: what were the big ideas, and how would I explain them in my own words? The effort of pulling it from memory is what strengthens retention.

    Space your practice

    Distribute study or practice across multiple days rather than massing it into one session. Returning after a gap makes recall harder, and that difficulty is what consolidates the memory.

    Pro tip For a Thursday test, study a little each day rather than dedicating a single Wednesday block.

    Watch out Spaced practice feels worse in the moment because performance looks rough — that discomfort is expected, not a sign it's failing.

    Interleave problem types

    Mix similar-but-different problems or skills in random order instead of drilling one type to mastery before moving on. This builds the ability to recognise which solution a novel problem calls for.

    Pro tip Use flashcards shuffled into random order to force your brain to identify the problem type each time.

    Watch out Massed single-type practice scores ~90% during practice but collapses to ~23% on a mixed test a week later; interleaving holds steady.

    Elaborate and connect

    Don't memorise terms — explain concepts. Ask why this is important, what would happen if it weren't true, and how it relates to what you already know. Attaching new knowledge to existing knowledge gives your brain more routes to recall it.

    Pro tip Pause and form a mental image of what you're learning and its connections, the way a medical student pictures an organ.

    Self-test to expose false fluency

    Regularly test whether you can actually explain or do the thing, not just whether it feels familiar. Metacognition — thinking about your thinking — reveals where your judgement of what you know is wrong.

    Pro tip Frequent low-stakes quizzing removes the pressure while still forcing the retrieval that builds retention.

    Watch out Pulling an all-nighter can win tomorrow's test but you'll lose roughly half of it within a week.

    Trust the struggle

    Adopt a growth mindset: pushing through difficult problems literally builds new connections and increases your ability. Coach your own brain through the discomfort instead of retreating to easier, less effective strategies.

    Pro tip Hold two goals at once — master the content, and get better at learning itself so the skill transfers to whatever you tackle next.

    Watch out A fixed mindset avoids hard problems to protect a sense of native ability, which is exactly the avoidance that stalls learning.

In the wild

Medical residents spacing surgical training

Residents learning to reattach tiny vessels with a surgical stitch were split into two groups doing four training sessions. One group crammed all four into a single day; the other spread the same four sessions across four weeks, struggling each week to recall the previous lesson. Weeks later both groups faced a surprise test: reattaching the severed aorta of a live rat. The spaced-out group vastly outperformed the crammers on every expert measure, saving a much larger percentage of the rats.

Identical training content, but spacing produced dramatically higher real-world skill under pressure.

Beanbag-tossing children and variable practice

Elementary children practiced tossing beanbags into a basket at gym for twelve weeks. One group always aimed at a four-foot basket; the other only ever practiced on three-foot and five-foot baskets, never four. At the end all were tested on the four-foot basket. The children who had never practiced that exact distance hit it best, because varying the distance trained more complex distance-judging and motor skills encoded in a richer part of the brain.

Varied practice beat repetition even on the specific target that only the repetition group had rehearsed.

Common mistakes

Mistaking fluency for mastery

Rereading until material feels smooth creates a false sense of knowing; a week later about half of it is gone. Feeling on top of something is not evidence you've learned it.

Drilling one topic until it's nailed

Blocking practice on a single problem type feels productive and scores well immediately, but it destroys your ability to pick the right approach when problems are mixed, as they are in real tests and real life.

Quitting because it feels hard

Spaced and interleaved practice deliberately feels rougher, so learners get discouraged and retreat to easier strategies — abandoning the very difficulty that was building durable skill.
