Error: struggling to retrieve and then getting feedback lets the hippocampus repair and stabilize the memory. Distinctiveness: memories compete because the brain reuses neurons, so attending to what is unique reduces confusion at retrieval. Importance: emotionally arousing, novel, or threatening moments trigger dopamine, noradrenaline and cortisol that promote plasticity. Context: the hippocampus files episodic memories by time and place, so matching context cues retrieval.
