Kwik breaks memory into three phases - encoding, storage and retrieval - and treats memory as a trainable skill. To encode, you make information emotional and visual, recruiting more of the nervous system so it becomes 'sticky'. To store, you use the ancient loci technique: take a place you know intimately (your home, your body, your car) and place vivid, exaggerated images of what you want to remember at fixed locations in a set order. To retrieve, you mentally walk the route and 'read' each image back, then lock it in with spaced repetition and active self-quizzing. The method exploits the fact that humans evolved to remember where things are and that the visual cortex dominates the brain.

Origin

Kwik draws the loci technique from the ancient Greeks and campfire oral traditions, arguing our hunter-gatherer brains evolved to remember locations, not abstract lists.

    Know the three phases

    Separate memory into encoding, storage and retrieval so you can diagnose where recall breaks down.

    Pro tip Reframe 'I have a bad memory' as 'I have an untrained memory'.

    Encode with emotion and senses

    Convert the item into a picture and layer in feeling, smell, sound and motion so it recruits more of the nervous system.

    Pro tip Smell is the sense most tied to memory - anchor a unique scent while rehearsing and reuse it when performing.

    Watch out Ordinary, information-only encoding is forgettable; emotion and imagery make it unforgettable.

    Choose a familiar location set

    Pick a place you know cold - your kitchen, your body, your office - to serve as fixed storage pegs.

    Pro tip Your own body works as a portable palace: scalp, nose, teeth, throat, shoulders, fingers, belly, bottom.

    Place vivid images in order

    Move clockwise through the location, setting one exaggerated image at each spot - avocado guacamole scalp conditioner, blueberries out of your nose, broccoli in your teeth.

    Pro tip Imagine you are eight years old; childlike, playful, rhyming images stick harder.

    Watch out Keep the order and route fixed so retrieval is a reliable walk.

    Retrieve by walking the route

    To recall, mentally revisit each location in order and 'read' the image back, forwards or backwards.

    Pro tip Recall the context first - 'where do I know this from' - because context gives you content.

    Reinforce with retrieval practice

    Lock the memory in with spaced repetition and active self-quizzing an hour later and beyond, because memory is repeated retrieval, not repeated exposure.

    Pro tip Explain what you learned to someone else to fire the same cognitive web again.

    Watch out Passively re-reading is not retrieval and does far less to strengthen recall.

Kwik pegs a shopping list to his body: avocado rubbed into the scalp like guacamole, blueberries shooting out of the nose, broccoli stuck in the teeth, olive-oil earrings, a hard-boiled egg choking the throat, kale as shoulder pads, a sardine necklace, turmeric powder stuck to the fingers, walnuts from the belly button and dark chocolate at the bottom. Each image is exaggerated and multisensory.

The full ordered list becomes recallable minutes or hours later without notes.

Underwater recall study

Kwik cites experiments where divers learned word lists underwater and recalled them best when tested underwater again, showing the environment gets anchored to the information. He extends this to rehearsing a talk in the room, light and smells you will perform in.

State- and context-matched study measurably improves later retrieval.

Common mistakes

Encoding without emotion or image

Storing bare facts leaves them ordinary and forgettable; the method only works when items are vivid and felt.

Confusing exposure with retrieval

Re-reading feels like studying but does little; the strengthening happens when you actively pull the memory back out.
