Reading notes over and over and highlighting them only creates a 'familiarity fallacy': you recognise the material and feel you know it, but you can't produce it under exam conditions. The method instead forces retrieval. Summarise a module to a handful of pages, read a section, close the page, and try to reproduce it from memory; if you fail, re-read and retry, then compound the next section on top. Struggling to recall is the signal that learning is happening. How to run it

Compress the module to summary pages
Write out your own notes for the exam, summarising the entire module down to a small number of pages. The act of compressing is itself part of the encoding.

Read a chunk, then close the page
Read a small section of your summary, then physically close or cover it so you can no longer see it. The page must be hidden for the test to be real.
Watch out If you can still glance at the page you are testing recognition, not recall.

Reproduce it from memory
Try to recall the chunk. If you can, move on and add the next chunk; if you can't, go back, re-read it, and try again before compounding the next piece.
Pro tip The bit you find hard to recall is exactly the bit that will bury itself deepest once you get it.

Adapt for interpretive subjects
For philosophy, classics or similar, don't memorise verbatim. Read widely so you can interpret and generate answers rather than reproducing fixed text.

In the wild
One host had a fixed revision ritual: summarise a whole module into roughly eight pages and learn them so precisely he could picture where a fact sat on the page. It worked for business and accounting because those curricula were finite and required no creativity in the answer. He noted the ceiling: on an interpretive subject, memorising verbatim would have left him with 'nothing but' the reproduced text.

Common mistakes
Re-reading and highlighting
Reading notes many times and highlighting builds recognition, not retrieval. You feel confident because it looks familiar, then can't reproduce it when the page is gone.
Memorising interpretive subjects verbatim
