The Three-Date Method is a dating filter built on stated intent rather than game-playing. Instead of performing, love-bombing, or waiting years to raise commitment, you openly signal what you want early, then back it with evidence. Being clear is itself attractive, but words alone are not enough: over the first three dates the other person watches whether your behaviour matches your claims. You must prove you are a man of substance who is reliable and consistent, the kind of person who can be depended upon in a family, not that you are wealthy or high-status. By the third date you should be able to discuss becoming an exclusive couple, and only after exclusivity do you begin testing for deeper, longer-term commitment. Naming the goal filters out those who don't share it and attracts those who do.
Origin
Developed by attachment specialist and former marriage-and-family therapist Adam Lane Smith from coaching thousands of clients through dating and attachment repair.
Core principles
- 01Clarity about what you want makes you more attractive, not less
- 02You must prove reliability, not status, to earn commitment
- 03Both partners are terrified to raise commitment first
- 04Stating intent filters out the people who don't share it
- 05Rushing to sex muddies the signal before you know each other
How to run it
- 1
Date deliberately across three encounters
Treat the first three dates as a structured filtering window rather than open-ended hanging out. Three dates is enough to establish an exclusive relationship if the fit is real.
Pro tip Go in knowing the third date is the natural checkpoint for the exclusivity conversation.
- 2
State clearly what you want
Say plainly that you are looking for a committed, long-term relationship. Clarity of intent is one of the most attractive signals you can send.
Pro tip Frame it as who you are and where you're going, not as pressure on the other person.
Watch out Do not confuse stating your goal with demanding they meet it on your timeline.
- 3
Prove substance, not status
Back your words with reliable, consistent behaviour. You must pass the test of being a man of substance who can be depended upon, not prove you are wealthy or high-status.
Pro tip Tell stories that reveal your values, mission, and the moral people around you rather than your purchases or exes.
Watch out Claiming you want commitment while scrolling porn, avoiding kids, or drifting with no direction fails the test instantly.
- 4
Raise exclusivity by the third date
By the third date, open the conversation about becoming an exclusive couple. This is not a marriage proposal, just confirmation the other person is right to pursue seriously.
Pro tip Most people stay silent because they fear being 'the psycho in the room' — naming it first is a strength.
- 5
Then test for deeper commitment
Once exclusive, begin observing whether the other person's actions continue to match their stated intentions over time as trust deepens.
Pro tip Watch for follow-through, not just declarations — behaviour under stress is the real signal.
Watch out Skipping straight to sex before this stage floods you both with feelings that fake love you don't actually have yet.
In the wild
Women come to Adam's live events saying it has been eight years and they wonder if their partner will ever marry them. Every time they hinted at commitment he broke up for six weeks, slept with other women, then returned — so they learned never to mention it. Adam's point: by refusing to state what she wanted, she filtered for exactly the man who would never give it, and stayed stuck for years. Had she named her goal early, she would have filtered him out and attracted a man who wanted the same thing.
→ Silence produced eight wasted years; stated intent would have filtered faster.
Common mistakes
Hiding what you want until year three
Both men and women stay silent about wanting marriage or children, fearing they'll seem controlling or psycho. Silence attracts the partner who never wanted commitment either.
Playing games and love-bombing
Not texting for three days, rushing physical dominance, or faking intense early love only farms insecure partners and repels the secure ones you actually want.
Proving status instead of substance
Trying to look like a wealthy high-status stud misses the real test: reliability and consistency that make you dependable in a family.
Is it for you?
Best for
Men and women who want a long-term relationship and keep attracting the wrong partners by hiding their intentions.
Not ideal for
People who genuinely only want casual dating or are not ready to be honest about their goals.
