Named for 19th-century psychologist Wilhelm Wundt, this inverted-U model describes how interest responds to the intensity or uncertainty of a stimulus. A weak or fully predictable stimulus is dull; as it grows more surprising it becomes more compelling; but past a threshold it tips into chaos and becomes off-putting again. The engaging zone sits at the top of the curve: unpredictable enough that you don't know what comes next, but structured enough that you feel you could figure out the pattern.
