During deep sleep the spaces around the brain's blood vessels expand, letting cerebrospinal fluid flush out metabolic waste, the glymphatic system. Body inactivity drives this brain clearance, so immobilized sleep on your side with the head slightly elevated is preferable. The bags, bloating and dull eyes after bad sleep are literally built-up lymph.
