Lembke says what separates the addicted is how hard someone is willing to work for their drug — her colleague Rob Malenka measures a rat's addiction by how many times it presses a lever for cocaine. Radical honesty as a self-binding tool for self-control

Lembke's favourite metacognitive strategy is telling the truth about what you've done and consumed, to other people. Forcing yourself to be honest with others makes you more honest with yourself, and there's evidence it up-regulates the prefrontal cortex, which governs the pleasure-pain balance and delayed gratification. Bonus: admitting things that make you look bad actually deepens intimacy rather than driving people away.
