How to run it

Shift focus to the recovery phase
When doing intervals or conditioning, make bringing your heart rate back down as much of the goal as driving it up. Treat the rest between efforts as active practice.

Set a heart-rate-recovery target
After a high-intensity effort above 90% of max, take a 60-second recovery and aim to drop 30-40 bpm. For a 190 max, hitting the 180s then dropping ~30 bpm in a minute is the hallmark.
Pro tip Most people manage only a 10-20 bpm drop; 30+ consistently signals good condition.
Watch out The drop will shrink as you accumulate reps; judge it across the set, not just the first one.

Use breathing to speed the drop
During recovery, take full inhales and complete slow exhales while consciously relaxing to activate the parasympathetic system and accelerate the heart rate decline.

Watch out Trying too hard tenses you up and slows recovery; the skill is to relax, not force.

Progress through positions
If someone cannot get their heart rate down, start lying down with eyes closed, then progress to seated, then standing, then moving, as they master each stage.

Verify you can drop 30 beats per minute across at least three to five reps of high-intensity work, not just once. Consistency is the sign the skill is developing.
