Your HRV score can't be compared to anyone else's

There is no single HRV calculation; systems use RMSSD, SDNN, pNN50 and different scales, so a 50 on one device and a 100 on another are not comparable and don't mean 'twice as parasympathetic.' The example of a CrossFit athlete hitting 200 on WHOOP versus a 110 ceiling elsewhere shows the numbers only make sense within one system. Compare yourself to your own age-group norms on your own device.

Why Jamieson distrusts overnight and wrist-based HRV

HRV is extremely sensitive: body position, breathing rate, caffeine, and even a stressful thought can change it, and you can halve it just by holding your breath. What HRV actually measures (and why the heart isn't a metronome)

HRV measures the pattern of your heart rhythm, which is governed by the autonomic nervous system rather than a fixed beat. A stronger, more variable rhythm at rest signals the parasympathetic 'rest and digest' system driving energy toward recovery, while a flatter pattern signals the sympathetic 'fight or flight' system. Reading that pattern tells you where the body is on the stress-versus-recovery spectrum.

Why higher HRV predicts a longer life

Roughly one in three people die of cardiovascular disease, and HRV correlates strongly with cardiovascular fitness (VO2 max), so a strong system is protective. HRV is also the best single marker of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is inherently anti-inflammatory. Since much modern disease is driven by chronic inflammation, a better-developed parasympathetic system lowers all-cause mortality risk.

Endurance athletes live longer; anaerobic athletes often don't

A meta-analysis comparing athletes' lifespans found many anaerobic athletes lived the same as or worse than average people. The only group that consistently outlived the average were endurance athletes, some by an average of eight years. This is why Jamieson argues you must develop the aerobic system, and why bodybuilders and powerlifters, some of whom died young, need cardio too.

The Russian in a trench coat who introduced Jamieson to HRV

Around 2000, coach Randy Huntington told a young Jamieson to call a number about 'the Omega Wave.' He met a thick-accented man in a trench coat at an airport, took his shirt off on a hotel couch, and got wired with electrodes that read his physiology cold. HRV had been pioneered by the Russians in their space program and later adapted for Olympic athletes before the Soviet Union collapsed mid-project.

The dopamine lever: why we train ourselves into oblivion

Jamieson recounts the classic experiment where rats wired to self-stimulate their dopamine centers pressed the lever until they stopped eating, stopped caring for their young, and died. He frames extreme training obsessions, and gambling, as the same mechanism: novelty and reward drive us to keep pressing the lever to our own long-term detriment. Awareness and deliberate long-term thinking are the only defense.

The three metrics that track together: HRV, resting heart rate, heart rate recovery

Because HRV numbers aren't universally comparable, Jamieson leans on resting heart rate, which inversely correlates with HRV and is comparable across people. He adds heart rate recovery, how fast heart rate drops after exertion, as a third correlated marker. All three track aerobic fitness and parasympathetic strength, but HRV and resting heart rate are measured at rest while heart rate recovery is measured in-workout.
