The Norwegian 4x4 is four rounds of four minutes at the hardest pace that can be sustained across the full interval, each followed by three minutes of very light active recovery. It is not a four-minute sprint: starting near an all-out effort would cause an early collapse, so the user must pace hard enough to prevent conversation while preserving the workload. The recovery exists to lower heart rate and make the next interval possible. Patrick recommends it as the strongest protocol discussed for raising VO2 max, typically once per week alongside other vigorous work, resistance training, and easier movement.
