SAD is a four-pillar test for whether any revision technique is genuinely effective, distilled from the science of learning. S is Spaced repetition: because memory decays exponentially, you review material at increasing intervals (day one, day three, day five) to push it into long-term memory. The first A is Active recall: instead of rereading, you sit down, ask yourself tough questions, and try to drag the answers out of your own head. The second A is Associations: you tie each new concept to existing knowledge so it has a hook to hang on. D is Desirable difficulty: you deliberately keep tasks challenging, escalating from flashcards to practice papers the moment something feels easy. Run any method (flashcards, blurting, mind palace) through the four letters to check it is worth your time.

How to run it

Space your repetition
Review new material at increasing intervals rather than in one long cram, revisiting it the next day, then three days later, then five, then seven.

Watch out A single ten-hour block followed by weeks of silence means you start from scratch when you return.

Force active recall
Close the book, ask yourself hard questions about the topic, and try to produce the answers before you look. Only check your notes once you have attempted it.
Pro tip It has to be repeated recall, not repeated exposure — rereading builds familiarity, not the ability to reproduce it.
Watch out Highlighting and rereading feel valuable but do very little; the feeling of fullness is an illusion.

Build associations
As you learn something new, immediately ask how it links to a previous class, a different subject, or a test question you have seen, and scribble those links in the margin.
Pro tip The same trick works for names: link a new person's name to someone you already know the second you hear it.

Constantly ask whether the task feels easy, and if it does, make it harder — move from a mastered flashcard set to test questions or full practice papers.

Watch out You will naturally drift toward subjects you are already good at; resist that pull.

Mistaking familiarity for knowledge
Rereading a page until it feels familiar convinces you that you know it, but you cannot reproduce it with the book closed. Familiarity and recall ability are different things.
Cramming once in a blue moon
Long one-off study blocks ignore the forgetting curve, so the material has decayed by the time you need it and you effectively relearn from zero.
